July 31, 2020 was a Friday. My husband Peter retired on this day, and on the following day we drove out of our driveway in our shiny new caravan, to begin our very own Australian Walkabout. Well, I guess it’s more of an Australian Rollabout, but that doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Our van, aptly named Chunky Bum, cleared the gates with a 100mm on either side, then nearly took out the little tree you can just see to her left.
Who would of guessed a tree could move that fast!
We truly hope that we will be travelling for quite some time, and don’t want to get to the point where all the places, people and events meld into one, so, this blog is basically our travel journal. Our hope is that when our memory fails us, the blog can put us back on track.
I will try to make the posts entertaining to read, but failing that, I am confident that you will enjoy looking at the photos. Photography has been part of my life since I was a kid and I intend to spend many an hour staring through my viewfinder.
We also hope that the blog will be used, by any who are interested, to follow our travels and to see what mischief we get up to.
We hope that you will enjoy the scenery and wildlife with us, and laugh at our stuff-ups (I’m sure there’ll be plenty of them).
Rather than saying we started our Australian Walkabout, perhaps it would be more accurate to say we dipped our toe tentatively into the world of the road dwellers. In those first two weeks we found some issues with the van, we got wet, we got cold, we got dusty, we got lost but more importantly, we loved it.
Our second trip has come to an end. We left home on September 8, 2020 and will be home by the beginning of November. After a lot of conversation, but not much debate, we have decided that we want more. More time on the road. More destinations. More freedom. More experiences. More…everything. The only logical thing to do is to put our stuff in storage, rent the house and hit the road.
Believe it or not, we did it! We hit the road full time on May 1, 2021 and our (rather loose) plan is to be in Adelaide for Christmas, then on to WA.
Travel Safe, travel well and be nice to the people you meet along the way. They might not be having as good a day as you are, and you might just be able to make their day a little better.
Let’s start by saying, we didn’t make it to Adelaide for Christmas, nor to Western Australia for that matter. Oh well, our plan was more of a guideline anyway. 🙂
We did however, see a lot of awesome country, and for the most part, had a fantastic time.
We explored a lot of northern NSW, including the Pilliga, Warrumbungle’s, & Gundabooka National Parks. We had a brief stint at Broken Hill before Covid had us locked down at Pamamaroo Lake, Menindee for nine weeks. Once free, we went to Tibooburra and Cameron Corner. Of course, these a just a few of the places we visited during our first seven months of touring.
Then, it all sort of went sideways. We were slowly making our way to South Australia, and Adelaide for Christmas, when we got a call from mum saying she was in hospital with a broken ankle.
We arrived at Port Macquarie, and picked mum up from the hospital on the 27th November, looking forward to her recovery and a nice Christmas with her at Port. This turned out to be a blessing for us, as early in the new year, Peter had a serious heart event resulting in a quadruple bypass. This was most definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time, as he was close to the care he needed.
Long story short, it took mum 12 weeks to recover from her ankle, and Peter three moths from his operation. So, here we are again, getting ready to travel on May 1, only this time its 2022.
Adelaide here we come!
